Australian Research Container Orchestration Service (ARCOS)

About

Containers are sometimes described as a computer within a computer which allows researchers to run software without installation, saving time and effort. Kubernetes is the emerging open source standard for deploying and managing scalable and portable container-based cloud-native applications. It has become the most commonly-used approach for multi-cloud application deployment. This enables communities to develop tools that can be deployed where the community member has container friendly resources.

The Australian Research Container Orchestration Services (ARCOS) seeks to emulate the transformational impact of the ARDC (OpenStack) Core Services competency by establishing a Kubernetes Core Service. The ARDC’s Storage and Compute theme in conjunction with the national community are developing the requirements of ARCOS.

ARCOS involves a national team of experts in Kubernetes. It includes supporting related open source software for cloud native computing, engaging with the international Kubernetes and Cloud Native Computing communities to ensure Kubernetes is developed to meet Australia's needs, establish innovative and operational best practices amongst the national stakeholders, and co-operate on developing part of the national technical eResearch ecosystem.

If you are based in Australia working in eResearch infrastructure and interested in or actively working on solutions in this space, we encourage you to be a part of the community. ARCOS is committed to supporting and promoting diversity, we welcome anyone who has an interest to participate and grow this initiative.
